Tip of the Week — Water Wisely as May Heats Up

As May warms up, your plants feel the shift just as much as we do. The key isn’t simply watering more — it’s watering wisely.

Outdoor containers dry out faster in warmer weather, especially in full sun. Check the soil daily and water deeply, making sure moisture reaches the root zone instead of just dampening the surface. Early morning is best, giving roots time to absorb water before the heat of the day sets in.

A helpful reminder: avoid watering plant leaves in the middle of the day. Water the soil, not the foliage. Wet leaves under hot sun can scorch, much like putting baby oil on your skin before sitting in the midday heat.

Indoor plants also respond to seasonal changes. As light levels and temperatures rise, they may need more frequent attention — but don’t rely on a strict schedule. Let the soil guide you, and water when the top inch feels dry.

As the sun shifts, keep an eye on your indoor plants too. Direct sunlight through a hot window can burn leaves, so adjust placement as needed. Grouping plants together and keeping them away from vents or overly warm windows can help maintain steadier moisture and keep them happier through the season.
