The Best Time to Plant Is Now
Watch here, Judy Oxford — a dear customer and friend of The Plant Shoppe — shares the story of a Clivia that has been passed down in her family for over 100 years. A living heirloom, cared for, divided, and gifted from one generation to the next. Not all plants are just for a season… some are meant to stay with you. Clivia is one of those rare beauties — with rich, strappy green leaves and blooms that feel almost too perfect to be real. But what makes her truly special is her longevity. With time, it grows with you — multiplying not just in size, but in meaning. A plant can become part of your story. A gift that lasts. A legacy you can pass on.

THE WEEKLY WATERING CAN
Now is the time to plant.
Down here in zone 9a, the soil is warm, the days are stretching, and everything is ready to take off. If you’ve been waiting to plant—this is your moment.
April is your window to get herbs, annuals, and porch pots in the ground and established before the real heat sets in. The earlier you plant, the stronger those roots will be heading into summer.
The key now isn’t when to plant—it’s how you support what you plant next.
As temperatures rise:
- USE GOOD SOIL! It matters. We love the brand Coast of Maine
- Water deeply, not just often
- Mulch generously to hold moisture
- And give new plantings a little protection from that first intense afternoon sun as they come straight from the nursery/greenhouse.
A strong start now makes all the difference in July.
